How to Have a Minimalist Wedding - Save Money But Still Have the "Wow"
73
How much are weddings in your area?
Practical Planning
I make wedding cakes as a hobby and became intrigued with the minimalist wedding once I saw how clean the wedding photos were. I have always felt that like planning for your wedding cake, planning for your wedding can be as complicated and costly as you want it to be. The more you save on the planning, the more you have for planning a honeymoon, or even putting a down payment on a new home or car.
According to the link above, the average cost for a wedding where I live is between $16,922 and $28,203. If you have a budget you want to stick to and you are creative or you have creative minds in your family, there are ways to save money and still have a wow wedding and reception, the latter of which can be most of your expense. The link above includes interesting tools to help you determine what your cost might be. You begin by plugging in your zip code and the average cost associated with where you live returns.
Basically, less does not necessarily mean your wedding or reception event will be any less beautiful and memorable. Your list can be as minimal and functional as you want it to be or you can explode with details. It all comes down to your plan.

Your Wedding/Reception Venue
Try to avoid larger common venues like the top suite of a hotel or the more expensive sites. Look for unique venues that will contain the number of guests you plan to invite. Also, there are some facilities that will house your wedding and your reception. Sometimes this choice can save money also. If you book your wedding on a non-traditional day like Friday or even Sunday, there are cost savings. Also, think about booking your wedding outside of the summer months--perhaps consider the fall months. Consider having your wedding at a museum garden or a park loaded with great landscaping and flowers. Decide what you value the most on your wedding checklist and remove things that just aren't necessary.

Yt, great hub! Our wedding was very, very simple and that is how both of us wanted it. I can't understand spending so, so much for one day. This looks like a great resource for those in the planning stage.
Thanks so much for the ideas and helpful links! I'm getting married next May, and have gone from the really expensive wedding complete with planner to a DIY low-budget small friends and family event. I really like how you call it minimalist, rather than low-budget, which implies cheap and not as good. My whole reasoning behind cutting the budget and "the industry" was that I felt like I could have a really classy, elegant wedding without spending a bazillion dollars.
We're now looking at about 75 people, in a lovely garden outside of an antique store. We live in the south, so we're doing a Kentucky Derby theme, with southern-style cooking, locally brewed beer and wine, and local wildflowers. Oh, yeah, and tents in case of rain, which I'm crossing my fingers won't happen. But at any rate, I'm really looking forward to seeing all my guests in linens and large hats wandering around the gardens and antiques with mint juleps in hand! And this wouldn't even have been possible at the 5,000 dollar traditional venue I was looking at!
Thanks for the Hub. I'm getting married next year and plan to keep everything as simple as possible - not just because of costs, but also because I don't want anything more to stress over when I should be enjoying the day. I have one bridesmaid (less drama), mason jars and flowers for centerpieces, and tri tip for dinner.
This is a gorgeous cake!
What a wonderful idea! I used to work in the bridal industry--what a racket!! I'm glad some brides are fighting back with good taste and common sense.

I was just thinking of weddings, as I have just confirmed that I will be attending one in Europe. It is a great article. Good practical advice and I love your hobby. I love weddings in general.
